Ad ideas for MLS/World Cup

January 05th, 2009 edit

  • I'm not sure how (or if) ESPN is promoting their soccer coverage this year, but they've long had clever ads.

I would like to see ads that play up our cult status, such as recreating scenes from cult movies. F'rinstance:

    >Chicago Fire players getting lost on their way to the field, as in Spinal Tap.
    >Simo Valakari dancing while dousing an opponent bound to a chair, as in Reservoir Dogs
    >Bruce Arena, rallying the various MLS players on the National Team to unity, as in the "Cyrus" park scene in The Warriors.
    >Landon, in loud 80's business suit, recreating the "Say hello to my little friend" line from Scarface (With a ball instead of hand cannon)

Tag line: "MLS Soccer and the World Cup on ESPN. America's Cult Classic."

  • Indiana Jones style: pick up the World Cup trophy and dribble out a cave that is crashing down rock AND has lots of famous defenders (if those exist). Let's have Landon or Dempsey do it.

edit: another idea would be some type of matrix 3 one-on-one battle. in the rain, with those crazy sonic waves whenever someone makes a sweet move.

  • I got one:

Convey and Adu fall from a ventilation shaft into a room full of defenders and proceed to juke them all (Boondock Saints)

  • One of the best series of ads was the one that speculated what all these great players would be doing in the parallel universe where somehow they did not end up playing. Dennis Bergkamp as a florist, Ryan Giggs as a sheep farmer, etc.

I loved the one where Eric Wynalda was a cheesy used car salesman, where he explains that he really wanted a pair of adidas shoes for his birf-day but instead his mom got him a skateboard... He's trying to push some crappy car on these people, and he's touting the "quality" of the seat coverings. "Hey, if it wasn't real vynil, would it burn like this?" as he takes a cigarette lighter to the seat. The people walk away and he desperately calls at them to come back. "You'll never get a better deal anywhere else!" Too funny!

  • Neat ideas. I'd like to see whether ESPN will come up any WC ads, not to mention funny clever ones. They certainly don't do it for MLS.
