I before C wont' work

January 05th, 2009 edit

  • The rage on the other thread is an annoyance.

Here is another perspective. AC is obviousuly gaming with I, and if you think about it, in the long term, it just won't work.

I've got three YYZ to California flights coming up in the next few weeks. In most cases, AC has lots of J, lots of C, and I is 0.

So I do what smart customers do. I'm not flying AC.

I can do any number of confirmed discounted-F United flights that get me to the same area, getting me 150% miles, a seat up front, and no stupidity in having to watch some jerk-off AC route manager play with I.

Customers determine the future of any airline; AC is gambling; it's a dumb strategy; and the transparency of today means we all know it. They've been brilliant with many things (i.e. CityPass) but I-games are a loser game for them.

We know it, and they should know it.

  • but how much more do you pay by flying another carrier in F?
AC M CLASS VCE-FRA-YYC-YVR 1580 EUR+TAXES. UG only confirmable at gate in FRA.
KL Z CLASS VCE-AMS-YVR 1810 EUR ALL IN- This is booked in WBC and is 4 hours shorter total travel time each direction

  • I guess the fact that a number of these US airlines are in bankruptcy helps a lot to get cheap flights up front. Even AC's J fares across the country were a good 400 dollars or so cheaper each way when they were in bankruptcy.

  • but how much more do you pay by flying another carrier in F?Depending upon where you are flying to (particularly to the US) you can often beat AC's last minute econo fares with some clever routing, and pay less for an F ticket/seat.

  • If you get an advance purchase fare on a competitive route, F doesn't cost that much more than AC.

Many times you don't even need the clever routing.
I have flown 6 segments on UA this year, 2 on HMY, 2 on Alaskan, of those 8 segments 4 were flown with other carriers because of I class BS.

  • US Airways has been getting my last minute business to the west coast lately.

I've paid extra to upgrade to F and still paid much less than I would if I played Aerolotto with AC.

I love AC, but I love competition more!

Can you give some examples of this?

  • ah--competition, tis a lovely thing. ^

AC did lose out on some rev on my last trip to Mexico as I did a UA codeshare on AC metal/UA metal hybrid. If they were competitive, I would have gladly flown them all the way. UA upgraded me one way w/o a certificate and the other way gave me three seats in Y all to myself on the red-eye so I could stretch out on a lie-flat "bed"--had a great sleep, better than being up front!

bingo. That's why i've flown UA, DL and CO exclusively on the transborders this year, unlike in years past. 9 of 9 trips this year have been on US carriers where access to CONFIRMED upgradeable seats are available and where i can buy a walk-up YUP fare for less than what AC will often charge in the back.

Go back 2 years when I did 6 out of 8 trips with AC...

    Oct 25 2005 YVR-IAH
    CO - YVR-SEA on a DH8 and the remainder of the journey in J - $830
    Various - YVR-SEA on a DH8 and the remainder of the journey in F - $904
    AC - YVR-YYZ on 333/767/321 in Y and the last 3½+ hours of the journey in a one-class CRJ in Y - $953
