Minimum age to join Aeroplan?

January 05th, 2009 edit

  • Is there a minimum age for joining Aeroplan? If nothing else, I'm sure anyone old enough to have a paid ticket (2+, right?) must be eligible to join.

    I can't find anything on www.aeroplan.com (http://www.aeroplan.com)

    Thanks!

  • Andrew

I had always assumed that thee was a minimum age and had not bothered signing up Miss LE (who is about 21 months) since she flies on empty seats. Your question prompted me to sign her up and it worked! (They do ask for a date of birth, BTW)

I'm now going to sign up Baby Miss LE (who is 3 weeks old), although she won't be flying on revenue for a while!

  • By the way, I've always wondered -- does AC still give out toys on flights? I know they had a puzzle of a 727 -- but this, of course, was back in 1984 -- the last time I flew AC until 2000.

My little Tractor Girls have never received anything - no birthday card, no benefits.

  • Thanks LondonElite! The individual in question (<3yr) is in fact travelling on a revenue ticket so I was sure Aeroplan membership was possible.

I see the "Aeroplan Kids" PDF form says 6-8 weeks and that you can accumulate when the number is received in the mail. OTOH signing up through the website is immediate (I assume)?

Travel is in about 8 weeks. Is is better to sign up through the web and forego the apparent benefits of Aeroplan Kids?

    Thanks!

  • They send our son (he's six) a birthday postcard.

That's it, (for benefits) as far as I can tell.

However, the points are slowly accumulating (I often buy his tickets on points and pay mine with cash -- business expense, of course), and he will soon be eligible for a shorthaul reward ticket.

  • The 'perks' (or not) of being an Aeroplan Kid were discussed in another thread I posted recently. Some kids had received birthday cards, others nothing. I think Little Hampton got one the first year, nothing since (5 years later).

BTW we're just back from Oz on AC with a short haul on QF, and all the way over to MEL there was not one kid's thing given to Little H, who proudly sported a Aeroplan Kids' luggage tag on his knapsack. On the way home, short flight MEL to SYD on QF the FA immediately presented him with a very cool QF kid's pack: Wallace & Gromit activity book, stickers, & pencil case loaded with goodies. When we boarded the AC flight in SYD an FA went around with the green Aeroplan Kids' case and did give him a few stickers and a neat postcard, and apologized that she was short on goodies, so that made us both feel better. AC could certainly improve on this front, I think.

  • I signed our kids up years ago and enrolled them in the Aeroplan kids thing. I think you can do it after the fact. My 11 yr old got a card this year for his birthday.

Look at Lufthansa though, to see if it makes sense for your kids. Once our kids hit 25,000 miles in their AP accounts (enough for a NA award) I switched them over to Lufthansa Miles & More. Last year, flying on the same flights as my wife they got approx 27,000 miles compared to the 19,000 she got. We had a couple of C/J fares in there that helped (LH has a better COS bonus), but Lufthansa routinely gave more points for discounted domestic fares. Since they don't have credit cards or long distance plans, all their miles come from flying.

I've tried to convice the kids that they have to speak with a German accent when they fly now, but they're not buying it.

  • We signed up our son when he was 8 weeks old, and he received a number of things.

A KIDS welcome kit, which included the following:

    1) his own personalized, colourful luggage tags (2)

    2) His Aeroplan card

    3) A small stuffed toy airplane

    4) His 'WINGS' pin with an AC logo on it.

    5) A letter to mom and dad welcoming our newest addition to the program.

Every flight we've been on (5 round trips) so far for my little one, he's receieved a small play package after boarding. Contains 6 crayons, colouring book, a small 8 page cartoon flying book and some toy cards

He's got this every time...now he's also been in Exec every time, with the exception of one YOW-YYZ leg. However, I've thought the benefits of Aeroplan Kids was quite extensive...my wife and I weren't expecting nearly al this.

With the low morale around here regarding E and SE, maybe we should all join the kids program. I didn't realize however than not all KIDS were getting this.

  • I often buy his tickets on points and pay mine with cash -- business expense, of course

I suggested this to the father in question (buying his own ticket for $$, not the business part) but it was too late. Still, on a trip to Europe the little tyke will be 2/3 the way to a short-haul award.

    Thanks everyone!

  • My Daughter is 6, and has been a member since her CP points were transferred over and hasn't received a thing. She has been travelling frequently between YYC and YUL this year visiting me, and is actually going to make Prestige this year after a trip to the UK later in the year. She does most of her travelling here as an UM, AC does do a fantastic job with this program.

  • I don't think there is any age limit. Our children were always members of both the Canadian Plus and Aeroplan programs which got rolled into one with the takeover. They have used their points at times and has quite a reasonable amount in their accounts. I think if your kids fly AT ALL they should be members of the commonly used FF program. They should avoid the preapproved credit cards etc offers which come with the mailings. They may like it but the parents may not be too thrilled with the perks.

There are benefits to being part of Aeroplan Kids? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif My sister never saw anything from them, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

  • Yes, it's 2..I'll see if I can get you the page...

  • Although hang on...look at paragraph 23.

    https://www.aeroplan.com/en/about/about_terms_conditions.jsp

This suggests that under 2s can have their own account.

  • My daughter was registered on-line as a member right after her birth and we were given an Aeroplan number immediately. We paid 50% for some flights for the convenience of a seat so we wanted her to have a number. I seem to recall that they gave me a tough time on the phone when I originally tried to register her with an Aeroplan agent, but on-line never asked for an age.

  • Maybe we should ask our resident expert on this topic? I see he's back from the cottage now! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
