UA: NYC-ANC $454 AI (10k+EQM)
I know this works out to be a 'paltry' 3.8 cents per qualifying mile (and 1.9 after bonus), but i challenge anyone to find better out of NYC :)
sample dates Sat 17th of may, same day turn around
JFK-LAX-DEN-ANC
ANC-DEN-SFO-LAX-JFK
I'm in too, but for the weekend before. It was just too good to pass up. If anyone is doing the jfk-lax-den-anc, anc-den-sfo-jfk routing on the 3rd, let me know.
rkw, interestingly I am doing this flight to burn through vouchers I collected as a grad student. So the difficult times don't end when school does :)
United doesn't want a SWU, just united.com does. Just another bug. You have to call to apply the CR-1. I've had to so this for a while on most domestic itineraries.
Is IAD-SFO leg 3 class equipment?
If so, I'd be temped to change my routing for more EQM.
That is my approach, to start with flexible dates in order to see on which days the outbound and returns are the cheapest. But, of course, then I only see the routings .bomb serves up on its own, and it is relatively uncommon that the ones I am after are among them, including routings like out to SFO, then back to DEN and on to ANC from there. That usually requires that I go to "multicity," which doesn't look at more than a single day, and which requires screen changes to try other cities.
This would be a quasi-MR, since I am prompted by the opportunity to earn a good amount of EQM at a low cpm, but I would actually plan to stay over a couple of days. If at all possible, I would prefer to avoid red-eyes, but that may not be doable, especially if I am to travel all the way back without stopping. Maybe I can break my return in SFO. Does breaking the trip necessarily result in a higher fare? I think the cities one can stop over in are SFO, PVD, and SEA, but do all of those have flights from ANC? (Must look at OW routes to see the possibilities to/from those cities, and how they might work with an itinerary starting in PHL.) Has anyone worked PVD or SEA into their itineraries?
Answers appreciated in next hour+, since must book by 12MN. (BTW, is it 12MN EST or CST?)
And remember, while y'all are here, please take advantage of the ANC FT crew's hospitality! We love to meet out-of-state FTers!
(And for those just on short layovers--I work at the airport and have been considering an AS BR membership...)

Total PIA to hang around SFO, but I might go to my friends house for a few hours. I used a CS25 and knocked the priced down to $335. It is not the greatest routing but for catching the tail end it's aight.
FWIW I can't get it to price out anymore.
I get to visit home for a total of 2 hours.
Well I am booked for almost the same flights as you... Check out my DO/MR calendar by clickin' my sig. Maybe we can get a few more people to join us?
FWIW you can still find the price, but you have an 8 hour and 1min layover in SFO... get in at 5:29am and don't leave till 1:30pm
But how likely is it to be there after mid-June? Isn't it likely that the fares will go up very considerably at that point and stay up until mid-September?
Any help with dates for me ex-PHL on UA?
If so, I'd be temped to change my routing for more EQM.
no the 5Pm is a 2 class... Plus you wouldn't be on that flight... You have to get to SFO before 12pm to catch the 12:51 to DEN.
tempting...very tempting

Gone now... But good tip! ^
No, it doesn't.
2 CR-1s required.
Next May will be crazy month for me.
Will have to fly to LAX (for work), HNL (for Inflight Do), ANC (for this MR) and SFO (for work) each week from NYC
I wish there was a way to avoid the overnight in NYC on the 23rd - can't see any other way to get there from DC for the 7am PS to SFO....I'm not such a deal-hunter that I'll take an overnight bus/train....
I'm JFK-SFO-ANC on May 24th and
ANC-DEN-SFO-JFK on May 25th (arrival into JFK Mon night/Tues morning)
Looks like we're on the same outbound. Maybe the same return too.
Purchase by April 18, 2008
Complete travel by June 19, 2008
Travel is valid on all days of the week
No minimum or maximum stay requirements on one way fares
ANC-SFO. See PM.
DEN-ANC is XF/NF 8. No problem getting into F on that flight.
$412, random weekdate, first weekend in June.
Never been to Alaska... sorta tempting.
Even $398 on some dates, also good Sat-Mon of memorial day weekend.
edit: good on NW ex-PHL, some dates in May.
Actually, I think it is VA14NA7. In any case...this means you can fly the PS flights for the transcon. ^
Craploads of availability too from what I can see.
John
Yeah, I'd second that. This will be my third time up there and it is a wonderful area. Lots to do even within a couple hours drive of ANC. My first trip was as a kid with my grandparents. We drove to Fairbanks (and Anchorage) from Ft. Myers, Florida. Now that was a proper road trip. ^
Unfortunately, I won't be doing any sightseeing this trip since I am only in ANC for about 1 hour and 45 minutes :D
John
Why don't you meet up with 3 of us Ft'ers on 5/10... We could have a quick meal at chili's.
There's a decent group of FT'ers in the ANC area... so feel free to extend your layovers longer then an hour and change :p
I personally don't get back "in the state" until the 4th... and leave for my own NY/DC trip on the 9th, arriving back the following week...
This is a tempting fare though, especially the EQM's... however I have no UA status, nor have flown UA (that I can recall), so I'd need a status match to survive all those miles! :D
But I've got over 55K planned/flown this year on mostly AS and one on CO... so I think I'm about maxed out (at least budget wise).
Thanks for posting this though.
Hope everyone enjoys.... love visiting Anchorage.
Now now, we mustn't forget the PHL/TPA-LAS bonanza in Jan/Feb! :D
tempting...very tempting
Have you been able to get PDX or SEA to work for a stop over? I haven't found a valid routing that would take me through those cities(and to more miles, of course)
Why don't you meet up with 3 of us Ft'ers on 5/10... We could have a quick meal at chili's.
I'll be on the night shift--4pm on. If it's after that, I'll definitely be here; if it's not too much earlier than that, I can come in early. Before about 2pm, though, you're gonna have to make it worth my while to wake up early! :p
If it works out, it's definitely a deal!
What time is your JFK-SFO?
Use the flexible dates option on home page of UA.com. Plug in any Friday outbound and same day return - it will give you choices for a 0, 1, or 2 day stay. Try May 17th for starters.
Are they for the same Itin. if so I am so in!!! If I can get bomb to book it.
SO ANC-ORD, could I tempt you to do another run?
Who is in with me?
Looking at 12305 EQMS and 24610 RDM's...
Be nice if I could get a few people to join me on this run., Lord knows this is a long one!
OH THE JOY IF UA DOES DO A DOUBLE EQMS!
I put in for e-500's for the whole trip... But I might change the return and use miles to see if everything clears.
For this trip I am sooooooo hoping for a bump opportunity.
Just got a PM from another FTer on some of the flights. Have to actually get SOME work done, but expect some PM's.
It was about $10 less for JFK, but that's another 2 hours drive for me, and on the return I need to get off the plane and high-tail it to work.
I'm taking the wife and kid and we're making a mini-vacation out of it... we're taking an early transcon so we'll have a 10 hour layover in SFO and get to see two cities for the price of one. I probably could have gotten a slightly better routing, but this is a good compromise for me on a MR and still seeing my family (in a 7 week stretch I will spend one weekend at home.)
PVDProf, I expect you'll arrange to meet up with the ANC FT crowd again! Bob's found Suite 100 to be much more open to his wine stash than Moose's Tooth was...
Seeing LGA- Den - ANC and back for a total price of $371.90, which nets just over 16,000 EQM's. May have to make the trip, they have the absolute best catnip the cats have ever had up there, good enough reason for a trip :D
The 3 cities came straight from the fare rules and like you found, in my few quick ITA searches (mostly in June) only SFO was popping up as a pre-fab itinerary.
I was happy enough to consider having a 10ish hour layover to enjoy the day in SF before continuing on that night to ANC that I wouldn't have time to fit in the other cities. (like i said i was eyeing this more as a mini vaca ;) )
good luck!
Next May will be crazy month for me.
Will have to fly to LAX (for work), HNL (for Inflight Do), ANC (for this MR) and SFO (for work) each week from NYC
The extra $15 is probably just the extra landing/airport fees for one of your stops--JFK or SFO perhaps?
John
Haven't done it myself, but there is a SEPTA commuter train that runs between the airport and 30th St. Station in Center City, so it's a pretty easy connection to Amtrak. See here (http://wikitravel.org/en/Philadelphia#By_plane) for more details.
Not dead. Try a simple RT search on UA.com May 24 still comes up at $461. When you find dates that a simple search works try to build up a longer, more indirect route.
Have you already confirmed upgrades? There are plenty of excellent E+ seats to and from ANC, which makes me believe lots of non status pax filling the bus. I am headed out to LGA in an hour to ticket.

I will have my FT tag. Breakfast at SFO anyone?
hsx, would you by chance have RCC access?
Nope, I've rebooked
JFK-SFO-DEN-ANC on the 23rd and ANC-DEN-SFO-JFK on the 24th, arriving JFK 10pm Sunday the 25th....
Now, how to get from WAS to JFK without spending a fortune on a hotel. How easy is the JetBlue/UA transfer? There's an IAD-JFK that gets to JFK 2:10 before my JFK-SFO....too risky?
If you guys have any time at all it is definitely worth spending some time in Anchorage and vicinity. So much to see and do. Feel free to PM me. Alaska is toward the very top of my list of favorite places in the world.
John
Mine too. I wish I had the time to take advantage of this deal.
You bet! I would suggest heading up the Glenn Highway a couple of hours north to the Matanuska Glacier. Check it out at matanuskaglacier.com - bring very warm clothes as it is always cold and windy on the glacier
Funny you're looking for bumps... I'm just hoping I don't get stranded somewhere along the way!
I'll brave the economy plus seats for the ANC-SFO.
As to the DEN-ANC that's a 757 and I'm thinking for a Saturday in May I should clear. But I am tempted to use miles for the return... Who knows... Where I'll end up. I bet you and ANC are holding the last exit row window seats on the ANC-SFO flight.:p

Actually I am in 6A
Wait a sec, 6A on which flight, DEN-ANC or ANC-SFO?
Depends on your days, and you have to do lots of searches... Not even ITA comes up with the best routings unless you prod it.
Are you stuck on routings through DEN?
But you better pull the trigger fast: SP142NA3 is drying up!
FWIW you can still find the price, but you have an 8 hour and 1min layover in SFO... get in at 5:29am and don't leave till 1:30pm

Definitely! :D
9:30am Friday...
Fare Basis SP142NA3
So far I have't been able find a return routing through DEN which is what I'm looking for to max the miles.
fyi, i'm looking to stay a few days but looking in early June, i didn't see any same day turns but overnights were pretty available
Added FYI, There are also returns to JFK routing thru IAD
overnight stay at ANC is needed.
How do you get 24K RDM from 12K EQM?
I might want to do this one too. But most likely from PHL... Though JFK would be sweet too!
May 10th, 17th and Memorial Day weekend are all available.
It's not that hard to find V inventory, actually. ^
Unfortunately, I cannot do this MR during Memorial Day weekend as I already have plans to visit BOS to meet up with friends at IC BOS (for mini-bar party ;) )
Now, only if UA runs doble EQM promo like DL and AA, I would earn more than 55K EQM for May.
It will be a personal record for doing domestic for this usually international flyer.
I put in for e-500's for the whole trip... But I might change the return and use miles to see if everything clears.
For this trip I am sooooooo hoping for a bump opportunity.
Using 500s is brave for those flights to/from ANC. I would imagine there's a decent amount of paid F pax on these routes. I figured buring 2 CR-1s for a MR of 10K+ EQMs was a good use. ;)
Funny you're looking for bumps... I'm just hoping I don't get stranded somewhere along the way!
Looks like a lot of people got in on this fare. :D
Uh oh hsxagent! That means there will be a lot of competition at the gate if they start asking for volunteers :)

I'm actually doing this trip next Saturday (4/26). My itinerary is PHL-IAD-SFO-DEN-SFO-IAD-PHL. It's 12,582 EQM and was $377.53 for me (I used a $150 voucher). With any luck, I can volunteer off PHL-IAD and hook up with PHL-SFO.

I am seeing outbound dates with these fares for PHL-SFO-DEN, but so far not coming up with the returns for the returns with the most miles for the least money.
Interesting how they price these things, with PHL the cheapest place to start, NYC a bit more expensive, and then the rest of the East, in particular WAS, considerably more expensive ($160 or so more). PHL must really be a weak link for UA, so they try to originate some more traffic there with cheap fares. It's 40 minutes for me to IAD or BWI, but probably 2.5 hours to PHL, so rarely would I consider PHL to start. (Did buy tickets for FCO starting from PHL back in February when the priceline opportunity was there, but then had to cancel at the last minute because of illness in the family.)
Can one get to the PHL airport easily by train, so that I might avoid driving there, especially for an early AM flight? Then might be able to program IAD-PHL as the last leg, go with only carry-on, skip out on the final segment.
Still plenty of seats, believe it or not. Are you trying to find fast turn-arounds or have a couple days in ANC?
My turnaround time is like 1.5hr, but going to stand by on an earlier flight which will give me 4-5 hrs in ANC. Anything close to the airport worth a visit?
Spend 5 or so days out there...every time I get .bomb to give me a den routing, the price jumps up...care to share the wisdom?

Very helpful.

For this trip I am sooooooo hoping for a bump opportunity.
My experience last summer/fall was the e500s always cleared easily...these flights are packed with non-status people. In fact, there were sometimes empty seats in F on 752s, even after all the NRSAs (averaging at least 2 identifiable NRSAs a flight). (Caveat 1: travel patterns may be different, and may play out differently with less seat volume in the shoulder season. Caveat 2: I don't think I was ever on a flight FTers had targeted for MRs.)
I didn't see a single bump on any of my ANC flights last year, though most were completely full. Again, NRSAs would fill up the couple empty seats. If you want to bump, take it on your lower 48 flights.
For my flight in, I'm going for e500s for DEN-ANC, though NF is available. I'm waitlisted with miles on my IAD-SFO leg, and if that clears, I'll confirm the whole trip. Return is in Y, since a 5 hour redeye doesn't leave time to enjoy F.
As to the DEN-ANC that's a 757 and I'm thinking for a Saturday in May I should clear. But I am tempted to use miles for the return... Who knows... Where I'll end up. I bet you and ANC are holding the last exit row window seats on the ANC-SFO flight.:p
Actually I am in 6A
Close as in within walking distance...Earthquake Park, the site of the land that slid into the inlet in the '64 earthquake (a good three or so miles north), or maybe the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum on Lake Hood (just across from the airport), which will soon be getting an AS 737-200 Combi aircraft.
Otherwise, the rest of Anchorage's sights (read: Downtown) are easy driving distance if you can nab a cheap rental car or want to take a cab ($15 each way; the bus doesn't run often enough to work well for a short turnaround.
Check http://wikitravel.org/en/Anchorage for an incomplete list of things to see, but with the short time you've allotted, a simple walk around Downtown browsing the touristy shops (Grizzly Gifts is probably the best and has, IIRC, some real Native crafts and less kitschy touristy things, though all have moose dropping jewelry...) and maybe enjoying one of the tasty Downtown restaurants (Orso, Glacier Brewhouse, Simon and Seaforts).
And if people with experience in ANC want to help contribute to the Wikitravel article I linked to, feel free! (I already did my service by contributing the Get In and Get Around sections.)
There's not a lot in Anchorage itself. Most people come to Alaska for what's outside of Anchorage--the natural beauty and unspoiled wilderness (though some would argue it's getting more spoiled as the tour companies make things easier for the tourbus crowd). The old joke is that Anchorage is only 10 minutes from Alaska...
If it works out, it's definitely a deal!
We arrive into ANC at around 9:30pm... Which is perfect for you!:D
Exciting stuff. After vouchers, this trip comes to roughly $50, plus subway rides :)
Good luck to all that got in by the midnight cut-off.
Yeah... that's what I thought.
But, ya know not all of us are there yet so maybe the OP (since they don't even have profile status posted) might want to mention that. I'm just sayin' ;)

Would you say what days in May and June you found a low fare going ANC-DEN-SFO-PHL?
